The danger of a heavy frost cancelling the game was going to be of no concern based on the ‘fiery’ performance of the team today.
It was to be a game of two halves, though, it actually was game of 3 thirds due to Winchester fielding a slightly younger side and only 1 sub.
This proved to be of benefit to the Andover boys as they exerted great energy from the beginning to put themselves 2-0 up in the first period via some excellent open play.
The 2nd period saw Winchester come back and the defence stood solid with a 3rd goal being the reward from a well taken short corner set piece.
The 3rd period saw Winchester continue to press but Andover continued to show the same energy (due to copious amounts of jelly babies) to score the final goal from open play. The team had the capability to increase this margin but were kept out by some excellent goalkeeping.
In short, the team’s defence should be very proud of keeping a clean sheet, midfield showed some great overplay and spreading the ball wide whilst attack got into good positions and worked hard getting back to defend.
Whilst all of the team contributed hugely to the result, special mentions should be made to those players that played out of typical positions, subs that rotated effectively and outfield players making their debuts. Congratulations guys and see you all on Saturday!
