Much to my frustration, the boys have mastered the art of keeping the coach and spectators on the edge of their seats (metaphorically of course as none of us have the luxury of sitting down).
The game started well with relentless pressure from the Andover boys seeing us take a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with two cracking goals coming from some wonderful open play, linking out wide, through stick to stick passing followed by driving into the D - the stuff us coaches strive for week after week, but often only dream about.
Still not sure if it was complacency or lack of fitness, but the game changed during the second and third quarter, where Gosport rallied and turned the game on its head. Two well worked goals by Gosport saw the scores draw level and the blood pressure rise. Fit bit quickly racked up my daily target as I paced from end to end following the ebb and flow of play. The game could have gone either way.
The boys found a second wind in the final quarter, regaining their desire to win. The pressure was definitely on Gosport for the bulk of the quarter, but we could not make it count despite the best efforts of all involved, including a few forays from the backs in to the Gosport 25 yards. The game ended two all, which all things taken in to account, was a fair result. Gosport's Player player was Alex Birmingham who put in a solid performance upfront.
