Andover made the trek to Wimbourne knowing this would be a tricky fixture but knew nothing but a win would be good enough if they were to continue to challenge for promotion. Andover started well but it looked like they were going to miss the prolific Eldridge up front as chance after chance were missed. It also looked like the Andover side would regret these missed opportunities as Wimboure broke and against the run of play scored the opening goal. Andover heads dropped which lead to a double substitution with Wilson and Hemming come on. Within 5 minutes the sides were level. Matt Hodgson picked up the ball at the edge of the D and crashed in one of his legendary crash balls. Russ Hemming already bracing himself for this ball had to re adjust as it deflected into the air and required a first time volley into the net. This was how it would stay until the break. With Jack Topplis being called upon to leave his mark on the Wimbourne attacker late on in the first half.
In the second half Andover dominated the proceeding in what became a very scrappy game not helped by a bobbley pitch . Mid way through the second Andover won a short corner and up stepped pistol packing Pete Lawrence who unleashed one of his big hits which crashed into the back board giving Andover the lead they deserved . Andover had a couple more chances after this with Jonah Graham hitting the post and Matt Hodgson forcing a great save from the young Wimbourne goal keeper. Andover held on to take the points and now look to their next fixture against Portsmouth.
Well done guys for digging this one out not our best hockey but still took the points and kept the promotion dream alive.
Great Day for me Goal, Man of the Match and Dick of the Day my kind of Hat trick !
